Experimental Self Portrait

When inspiration strikes, you must take advantage – even when no one is around to model for you! Last Friday, while scrolling through my Instagram feed, I felt my creative juices flowing. Instagram makes a weekend hashtag project every Friday, and encourages you to take photos over the weekend that fit the theme. Last Friday’s was #WHPwindy. I had been looking at a lot of experimental portraiture, and having just finished my very first flower crown a few weeks prior – which I had yet to shoot, all of my creative juices were flowing, and I needed to make an image! So here’s what I created…

It’s surprisingly difficult for me to be on the other side of the camera! But I think it’s good for photographers to get their image taken so they can really understand what it’s like for their clients. (Hmm, perhaps I need to book a real shoot soon!) I had to work the shoulder, chin forward and down (have you heard me say these things?), relax your eyebrows, relax your mouth…

To make this image I used (1) black Elmer’s presentation board (which I bought at Walmart for under $10!) for the background, (2) a tripod, (3) remote shutter release, (4) a fan, and of course, (5) my camera. After I took a few snaps, I imported my image to Adobe Lightroom, made a few edits, and added a VSCO filter. I encourage you to get creative, and try something like this yourself! Post your Instragram in the comments so I can follow you! You can find me at @rachellakeca.
