Continuing with our tradition (which we started last year haha) we spent Mother’s Day weekend visiting some local nurseries in the Annapolis Valley so I could get all my plants for the season. I actually really enjoy this, despite the boys being a bit more rambunctious this year, which made for a slightly less relaxing, browsing, chilling type experience and more of a “slow down!” and “No running!” type of experience. Maybe because it was Mother’s Day, or maybe it is because we live amongst such lovely east coast personalities, but everyone is always so kind and forgiving to us, whenever we go with our wild children.
The three nurseries we went to this year were: Summerland Nursery in Wilmont, Briar Patch Farm & Nursery in South Berwick, and Glad Gardens Family Farm Market & Greenhouses in Waterville. (The last two are only minutes apart on Hwy 1.)
The tulips at Summerland Nursery this year were particularly lovely and I always enjoy a short stroll through their beautiful gardens.
Last year I got hostas from Summerland which have come back beautifully this year, so I’ve decided to add more perennials (irises, daisies, tulips) and I’m trying my luck at lavender again even though I’ve killed it several times.
Last year we bought starter tomato and cucamelon plants from Glad Gardens and there was an abundance of results! This year I’m trying with seeds for the tomatoes but we did buy cucamelon and peanut – has anyone ever tried to grow peanuts before!? We were surprised to see them so had to try! I did start my giant pumpkins since they were a failure last year, so hoping for better luck this summer. Our weather is certainly off to a warmer start this year.
It was my first time browsing through Briar Patch and we got some lovely daffodils and a few other annual flowers for our lots from them.
I am so excited for another summer here in this beautiful province!
